What does my snake's enclosure need?

Different species have different needs but there are a few requirements shared by all snakes. Here is a list of what "most" snakes require as far as captive care. There are exceptions to a lot of the "rules" and it is always important to thoroughly research the needs of the specific species you are planning to keep before bringing it home.
  • All snakes need fresh, clean water available to them at all times.
  • Most snakes require a specific temperature gradient.
  • Most snakes require at least one secure hiding place.
  • All snakes require some amount of ventilation.
  • An escape proof locking lid or door.
  • Some snakes require a loose substrate for burrowing.
  • An accurate way to measure the temperature at the heat source.
Here we have what would be considered the most basic setup. It is tailored to suit most non-arboreal species. It contains everything the snake needs to survive but none of the decorative touches people like to add to their setups. It is also designed so that everything can be thrown away or easily washed.

Those are the basic "ingredients" needed. The specifics can be played with and reworked until something more appropriate for you and your snake is found. But like I mentioned earlier, you should always research the specific needs of the species you are planning to keep. There may be small but important differences between two seemingly similar animals. Be it a slight difference in temperature, space requirements, humidity needs or a change of substrate, these are important needs that must be met.
